Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of your Body and Mind to face Stress, Pain, and Illness is the classic book on mindfulness, and Kabat-Zinn has is a leader in bringing Eastern ideas to Western doctors. With a little discipline, you could use this book to follow his own Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction training, week-by-week. There is a chapter dedicated to yoga, although the entire book emphasizes the mindfulness that yoga cultivates.
I remember finding this book! I was twenty two, figuring out a long-distance relationship and a cross-country move, wandering through a now-closed bookstore in my hometown. I picked up Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Full Catastrophe Living (as well as Julia Cameron’s The Right to Write). I worked through both books over the next few weeks, finding my interest in “wellness” for the first time and finding needed comfort and insight in each chapter. I’ve read pieces of it over and over in the years since, each time finding new insights to underline and new ideas to bring to the mat…
I’ve got a copy I can lend any of my yoga students. It’s a bit marked up! ~jordan
